In 2018, I saw my older brother for the first time in over ten years. We spent the day reconnecting, sharing stories, and reminiscing over shared childhood memories.

We spent part of our day in a local government office building where he needed to complete various documents as a new resident of the state. Shortly after sitting to review the papers, I could see my brother struggling to read and comprehend what was in front of him.

It became clear that he was illiterate.

By this time, I had spent the last ten plus years as a teacher, school principal, and state education official. Yet, nothing had prepared me to witness, first-hand, the life trajectory of a person who did not have the opportunity to properly learn to read.

I knew it was time to solve this problem!
